The founder of Cardano as well as the CEO of IOHK, Charles Hoskinson was a co-founder of Ethereum — a global, decentralized platform for money and new kinds of applications. Charles Hoskinson announced via an interview with Forbes that he is launching “an enterprise blockchain framework that aims to provide financial services to billions of people living in African countries.”
He calls this one “Atala” stating it will provide multiple solutions for developers, businesses and even the governments that are working towards the implementation of new products.
“Atala is an enterprise framework similar to Hyperledger Fabric, however, the point is to be a solutions provider for governments in need of a municipal currency or a supply chain management system. This requires a type of framework that serves as libraries and modules that would allow governments to rapidly build a product for end users,” Hoskinson recanted to Forbes.
The IBM Blockchain Hyperledger Fabric is a uniform project of open source blockchains and related tools that usually fosters Fortune 500 companies but according to the Atala founder, Atala has contrarily been designed to cover the needs of developing countries. The platform reportedly provides real-world use cases such as property registration, voting systems as well as supply chain management. According to Hoskinson’s statement, there is the intention to adopt its own cryptocurrency that is fashioned for collaborative use with the Ethiopian government in the development of a digital asset to help in the provision of a secure and dependable transfer system. He said, “While we have several MoUs signed, the most prominent of which we are going to build is a utility currency for Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. We are working with the Ethiopian government to create a new digital payment system that will allow six million users to pay their power and electric bills with cryptocurrency. We want to eventually combine this with an identity card.”
Charles Hoskinson is a technology entrepreneur, mathematician, and blockchain enthusiast based in Colorado. He maintains an impeccable record as a founder of Invictus Innovations, Ethereum, and IOHK, three cryptocurrency -related start-ups. He had also established the Cryptocurrency Research Group in September 2013 and was the founding chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation’s education committee. Now he is primarily known for creating Cardano but has put Africa on the map again with the choice to launch ‘Atala’ with the Ethiopian Government alliance.
