Inclusion of “.Ng” in Business name registration in Nigeria, CAC’s counsel.

The Corporate Affairs Commission is in charge of administering companies and allied matters act, including the regulation and supervision of the formation, incorporation, management and winding up of companies.

Representatives of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) paid a courtesy visit to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on invitation by the Acting Registrar/CEO of CAC, Azinge Azuka Obiageli.

The NiRA team was led by the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Edith Udeagu and was welcomed by the Director of Customer Service, Mrs. Gertrude Uzochikwa Akalonu, representing the Acting-Registrar/CEO and her team. The Executive Secretary stated the importance of CAC’s charge and role in the registration of Business names and Companies. She further implied that NiRA could leverage on this for prospective business owners to register their .ng domain whilst registering their business names and Companies with CAC.

The crux of the gathering was said to be to familiarise the Corporate Affairs Commission of who NIRA is and seek an alliance with Corporate Affairs Commission to grow .ng in cyberspace and for every newly CAC registered business to have a .ng domain name with its website hosted locally.

The CAC Director of Customer service appreciated the visit and made a suggestion on how the cost of domain name registration could be absorbed and the regulation process in response to the NiRA spokesperson.

She also underscored the need to encourage the ease of doing business through policy development and proffered that NiRA should endeavor to collaborate with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and be visibly present at the Annual NBA conference. The Director relayed information at the meeting that CAC had embarked on a promotion to reduce the Business name registration cost to N5,000.00 (Five Thousand Naira Only). She said, “This is aimed at encouraging the growth of Small and Medium Scale Businesses and promoting the ease of doing business. The promotion on the reduction had been on for about six months and the Commission had seen a tremendous increase in the registration of businesses”

She hammered away at the Corporate Affairs Commission being committed to contributing to the growth of the ICT Industry. She stated that the CAC is ICT driven. This is a huge encouragement to NIRA to create more awareness and sensitization of the .ng domain name. The meeting ended on an optimistic note as Mrs. Akalonu assured the NiRA team that she would relay information gathered to the Acting-General/CEO from the visit and requests.
