The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), founded March 23, 2005, is a stakeholder-led organization that was registered as an Incorporated Trustee on February 9, 2007. Its board undertakes the onus of managing Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD), dot ng. Coordination of this important National Resource, ‘the internet’ was made possible by the transfer of the appropriate management which was led by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on behalf of the Nigerian Federal government. Stakeholders within Nigeria’s Internet community participated in its formation.
The new president-elect of NIRA, who is also the CEO of Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), Muhammad Rudman takes over office from the immediate past president, Rev. Sunday Folayan. Mr. Rudman was unopposed in his running and was announced elected President during NIRA’s 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM) by Mary Nma Uduma, in Lagos on Tuesday.
At a meeting held in March 2006, NIRA’s Constitution was adopted by Stakeholders and a Board of Trustees (BoT) was elected among the stakeholders. Dr. Isaac A. Odeyemi was the pioneer Chairman at the time. The first Executive Board (board of 10) of NIRA was elected shortly after the adoption of the Constitution by May 1, 2007
There was an initial call to interest companies (for likes of residents in Nigeria and Nigerian abroad) to be pioneer registrars, this was done in April 2008. Following a Laborious evaluation process by the NiRA Registrar Accreditation committee, was the appointment of twenty-nine (29) Pioneer Registrars for the .ng Registry, at the various levels (Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Standard) approved by the Executive Board. Applications are received from organizations who want to become NiRA Certified Registrars on a regular basis and NIRA’s Policy does not limit the number of certified Registrars. Hence, an accreditation process is scheduled quarterly.
The formation of NIRA has truncated the long years of contention over the management of the Internet, an important national resource. This resolve was following the intervention of the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR.
A new president is for a new tenure that is hopefully progressive and positively eventful.
