Winners Emerge At ‘Startup Friday,’ South East Edition in Nigeria

StartUp Friday is an avenue designed especially to enhance the growth of an exchange community of investors, mentors and other key players in ICT to ignite the regional tech entrepreneurship ecosystem and also to boost talents within the region.

Earlier in April 2019, The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) had announced that the agency was ready to empower youths within Enugu and the South East region with Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills through its Start-Up Friday (SUF) programme. This regional edition in Enugu took place on April 26th and Greenage Tech, Inaaga.ng, and  SchoolSuite emerged as first, second and third respectively.

The SUF programme is a known gathering of tech entrepreneurs designed by NITDA and implemented by the Office for ICT Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIIE), a NITDA subsidiary.

The National Coordinator of OIIE Dr. Amina Sambo-Magaji, in a statement in Abuja, noted that “the SUF in Enugu would be the last round of igniting the six geopolitical regions across the country.”

She also said that the SUF, would ensure that ICT start-ups within the region were encouraged and supported by the government, which is the 12th edition in a series. “The programme is not just for Enugu but also Abia, Anambra, Aba, Ebonyi, and Imo states. This completes the first round of our regional technology ecosystem ignition’’ She said.

The Base Event Center, in Enugu, hosted the event where 10 startups pitched to the best of their ability. The startup in the first position, Greenage Technologies is in the energy industry and has impressively solved power challenges for homes, offices, and businesses. This Startup has joined the path of renewable energy production and storage, targeting parts of the country that lack it. They have clocked a deserving win as they had previously gathered momentum in other regional stages, catching the attention of many.

The first prize money was 200,000 NGN, 150,000 NGN went to the second place winners and 100,000 NGN to the third. It is a commendable effort of the NITDA team and the supporting governments not just for the cash incentives but for the opportunity to express technological innovations.
